One of Telford's major successes has been the high level of overseas investment. Some 130 foreign firms are in Telford with a large proportion coming from the United States, Japan, Taiwan, Germany and France. These have helped to forge a cosmopolitan business culture that gives the town a unique flavour and helps maintain its leading edge.
The town sits within the Wolverhampton to Telford Technology Corridor, a university-led network of regional public and private sector organisations that encourages innovation, knowledge transfer, new enterprise and increased competitiveness in the region. Projects like the e-Innovation Centre and the Innovative Product Development Centre are providing a focus for companies to push the boundaries of technology and innovation.
Telford is extremely good value for money for both living and working. House and land prices, rents, business rates and employment costs are all below average. Telford has been rated as one of the UK's most cost-effective locations for inward investment*. The study compared business start-up and running costs in 80 locations in nine countries across America, Europe and the Far East. It measured factors such as labour costs, taxes and utility bills for 12 specific types of business. In the study, Telford ranked above the rest of the Midlands ahead of Birmingham, Derby, Nottingham and Leicester.
There are extensive land holdings to accommodate future growth including new campus and office development sites. Industrial and warehousing accommodation is readily available on modern industrial estates and most office accommodation is located on purpose-built business parks, close to the town centre.
A key ingredient to the on-going success of Telford as a business location is the availability of professional networks and support organisations. There is a deeply rooted culture of cooperation and partnership which ensures that people receive professional support and practical advice whether they are multi-national inward investors or homegrown companies, school-leavers and jobseekers or young professionals and senior business people.
Telford has been selected as an important regional growth centre and it is predicted that the population will rise up to around 200,000 over the next two decades. This will make Telford larger than cities like Newcastle, York and Oxford are today. This step-change in the growth and development of Telford is going to open up many new and diverse opportunities for individuals and businesses.
Telford is a great town and with the right kind of investment it is set to be a great place.
We are keen to develop relationships with key partners, developers and investors that want to work with us to achieve growth. For more information on opportunities in Telford please view the projects page or:-
